  • Feels Good To Think of an Idea or Make Corrections then Build/Deploy

    |
    Updated at

With my own custom build, 😌, deployer that uses a build server with podman and then SystemD for managing the application runtime.

Typically test any changes on dev then build/deploy to my home build server. After that, deploy to production. It's cheap and easy to do. I should consider adding cheaper checks for duplicate deploys so that an app restart is the only thing that's needed if a build is already on target server.

Nevertheless, feels good. No Kubernetes, no docker containers, no bs complication. Scales...

  • InfluxDB IOx Unbounded Cardinality

    |
    Updated at

I was wondering how they could claim unbounded cardinality because what I've seen in TSDBs is a mapping from a unique time series to an id usually 64 bit integers. I've always been interested in making an in-memory TSDB some day mostly because I'd like to use it locally anywhere mobile, backend and frontend.

The only way I've ever thought of unbounded cardinality is to get rid the mapping and store the text close to the data. Practically though, I only ever thought of solving the cardinality problem was keep...

  • Pretty Cool Way to Explain How Sound Works to a Five Year Old

If you wanted to explain how sound is generated and propagated to a five year old this would be a great post. The interactive elements definitely help with visualization of the concepts.

  • "No big difference between 30fps and 60fps"

    |
    Updated at

I remember when people said this in order to justify 30fps games and 24fps videos. Yet when a 60fps video comes up on Youtube, I always always question if it is 60fps and see that it is. The fps difference is absolutely perceptible.

There is a significant difference in smoothness. I think people who claim this B S are just fucked in the eyes. 60fps to 120fps is also perceptible, but that's because once you've gotten used to 60fps you can see the difference between that and 120fps.

  • Common Mac M1 Linking Error

    |
    Updated at

You've probably seen this error message "building for macOS-x86_64 but attempting to link with file built for macOS-arm64" and are stumped and complain about whatever library you are linking against. Read that message over and over and you might realize your mistake. No, it is not the libraries fault and may not even be your fault, but you have to figure out how to fix it.

The error message is very straightforward. DO NOT BUILD OR LINK X86 APPS OR LIBS USING ARM64 LIBRARIES. YOU CANNOT MIX ARCHITECTURES.

    That...

  • Optimized My Blog V3

    |
    Updated at

Well, as part of version 3 of the blog I wanted to close down my blog's API HTTP in favor of an endpoint on this domain. It was driven by my desire to reduce public web surface of the blog, which meant I could use my custom ZeroMQ RPC library in achieving this. That led to some yak shaving I needed to do to get authentication/authz middleware support on the RPC server. Middleware is used via HTTP for the internal management UI side of the blog, but now the RPC server does it and the migration was seamless b...

  • Avril Lavigne went Back to Her Old Style

    |
    Updated at

Less poppy, less slay, and less girl boss blah blah. More rocky with her exuberant natural voice. Right mix of attitude and rock.

Not bad at reaching out to her early 2000 style and adding to it, but still needs work. Again, much better than her "lost" decade in starting around 2010. I don't blame her for dedicating more attention to pop, girl boss, lean in etc. since the attention was there from her newly acquired audience, so I welcome the change back to a rocky style because punk is where she started at a...

  • Russia Embarassed by Ukraine War

    Updated at

    Article: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/two-putin-allies-ridicule-russias-war-machine-public-2022-10-03/

Russian officials say the history of Russian warfare shows that fighting often begins badly until the military can be properly organised. Writing off Russia, they say, is a poor bet.

This against a smaller and underfunded foe? Uhh, did they remember Soviet-Afghan war in the 80s? They said the same of the US being unorganized in WW2 then becoming more organized, but lets be honest it was the All...

  • ZeroMQ RPC Extreme High Performance or 280k Requests/Response Per Second.

    |
    Updated at

When I say RPC request and response, that means the request and response were serialized/deserialized with messagepack. It's just message passing in the end.

ZeroMQ is fast I mean really really fast. ZeroMQ is a networking library and should be part of any toolkit where you need extreme high performance and reliability between applications.

    Let's do some math

    140k requests per second + 140k responses per second = 280k req/response total. That's 2.8 million in a 10 second span. This measly server can handle m...

Hasn't been announced so there is no name, but looks like fun to play. Depends on the repetitiveness though. Hopefully they have some interesting boss and enemies to keep things fresh.
