Gemini 2.5 Pro March Exp edition was effectively Gemini 3, it was a hell of a leap. The Gemini of today is definitely Gemini 2.5.
Man Today's Gemini 2.5 Pro has gone down hill. It is just so bad, like holy f**k.
When Gemini first released in March 2025, I can't say I was excited due to past experiences with Gemini, but when I got it writing code and managing a codebase with it, I was excited. Excited enough to go create a plethora of non-trivial software in Rust. Gemini was just so good at understanding and extrapolating from discussion and then creating plans that we could go through together and come out to code then validation tests.
Would I try creating these non-trivial software in Rust today with the current Gemini 2.5 Pro, probably not. It is infuriating how terrible it is. It doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. I don't know if they are just gatekeeping for the $200+/month now, but holy shit it is badd. I don't even want to try paying for the highest plan because there's no indication of whether it would be worth paying for. It could be the same shit model as in AI Studio.
You can still get nuggets out, but it's like you are constantly mining, hitting a slot machine. It's like a casino that realized it had to rig the slot machines so that you play longer. The problem is, there are competitors with better models for free and if you pay you just get more of it.
Worst part of any AI, one that Gemini does quite a bit, is not follow instruction, argue with your instructions, hide details that it wants to add into your plans. It just feels that it knows better than what you want and sabotages your plan and leaving you with the ball when it feels it is too constrained or has no idea what to do next.
I don't know what Google's strategy here is, but it is terrible and they are burning Gemini to the ground.
