  • Started using Google Reader

since last month and IT IS SO FREAKING USEFUL! My gawd, why haven't I used this before? The most useful aspect about it is the fact it provides two keys "j"/"k" to navigate through the news items, so you are basically skimming for interesting things with no friction! You can mark all as read for certain rss feeds like hacker news for example as there is no way I'm going to read every item that appears in that feed. I don't think I've gone to the websites of these sites since I've used Google reader with exc...
  • Pretty surprised at Javascript's Date Object

    Updated at
It makes it so easy to get the current time, date, timezone, and everything you could imagine except the idea of meridian time: AM and PM. It is workable to use the 24 hours time, but simplicity includes not making people have to think about what they are looking at (At least in my definition).

I was using NetBeans when I was looking at the Date object functions and saw this function: toLocaleFormat(). A locale formatter you say? Sounds like the best thing I've heard of. Printing the date/time with respect t...

A bit ironic, if you know what I like to do with my free time. Hint: click Projects in the menu then come back to this post.

Let's see, I've been working furiously on Dark Gale to get it to minimum viable i.e. playable to anyone. I've been making great progress in getting the UI to be responsive by giving feedback when you perform an action.

One of my great feats during this time has been the guild profile page and how I managed to simplify the interface and at the same time get all the management controls on...
  • I hate PHP Form Validation and I think I've simplified it.

Form validation is the scourge of my life. Have you ever tried to validate a form on your own and end up with a mountain of if/elseif/else statements and maybe a success variable to check on? Yes me too, even right now. I really really want to end this, but how? I think I've come up with a simpler way of doing it and it involves using objects, but first an intro to my problem.

    The Problem

Let's say you start a project today and you are like me. You hate writing what it seems to be like ENDLESS AND GRUELING I...
  • Need a Self Signed Certificate and/or Certificate Authority for your Server?

    |
    Updated at
You probably heard of https or secure browsing. Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and many other companies use it. You also probably want to make your own web site and "secure" your connections. Well, it's pretty darn easy. Self signed certificates are useful in your development servers though public facing web sites should generate a certificate from a known certificate authority.

There are two ways to go about creating certificates. You can create a single certificate for easy usage or you can get more complica...
  • Windows 8 Music App not displaying any music?

Technology sometimes... Let me imagine your scenario, you are organized and have your music library is a bunch of folders. There is no audio file in sight as you scroll down. This is probably where the music app is getting confused. Solution: you need one music file insider of the root view of the music library then it will scan the rest of the directory hierarchy and find all of your other music.
  • Tips for Getting Ideas for Design

    |
    Updated at
You, like me, use the computer, browse the web, look at cool effects, nice designs and all these other ideas that reasonate with you. The problem is, when it comes to time to create your own design, you have no idea where to start. Your problem is best solved in stealing what you like to see. Be it web site design, picture, or animation.

    1. Look at other designs

The no. 1, most important way, and most often cited way of getting an idea is to look at other designs. This may entail going to sites like deviantA...
  • Does Windows 8 wake up at a scheduled time for you?

    |
    Updated at
Apparently, at around 6PM every day, my desktop PC wakes up from hibernate. What this hell? Ever since I upgraded to Windows 8, which was on the first day it came out, I've been trying to see what the heck it could be. There are a number of things that can wake your computer:
    1. Scheduled wake from bios
    2. Hardware such as network card, keyboard, or mouse
    3. Scheduled tasks (find in control panel -> admin tools -> task scheduler)

My bios doesn't support scheduled wake, so I can't see how this could be a factor in my cas...
  • How to Change Fashion Shopping?

Technology. Just imagine being able to walk into a shop have a Kinect camera scan your model as you walk up to kiosk and being able to try on different combinations of clothes. It would be a simple experience where you pick clothes and sizes on your model and in real time see how it looks by walking around or using gestures to rotate the model. Finally, once you've decided on what you want simply use NFC to grab the items and the location and pick them up.

There are obvious ways to complicate it, but I like ...
  • What I tend to think about most developers (or people)...

Before you read. If you want a tl;dr (too long; didn't read), then skim until you see something interesting or don't read this.

is that they don't care enough about the work they are doing or care more about financial security in some form than the success of the team. The latter is fine sometimes as it is more or less motivation to work. My problem with both of these is that when I work towards something that I envision myself doing for the next 2-5 years I care enough about my work that I have to make sure...
