Voice Commands can be Useful...
if done right. Imagine talking to your computer in order to write an email or document. You'd name your computer "Jester." I imagine the use case scenario for responding to an email:Jester," new email"
"Hello there, my name is N.O. and I am seeking your assistance."
Jester, "Remove I am seeking your assistance" -> result: "Hello there, my name is N.O. and"
"I want to take a trip down to the office and chat about something I feel is exciting enough for me and what I think is a great opportunity for you." -> res... -
Only because there is ZERO Emphasis on Coding Style in R
http://google-styleguide.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/google-r-style.html
Read it and then read it again in a week and incorporate some of the styling because Statistics professors aren't going to help you. They don't care and you don't either mostly because they and you are looking for results. I wholly believe a style helps with reproducing code from memory and explanation of it. When called to share your code, you'll just open sores with bad looking/not commented code.
There is of course a few who do care abou... -
Celice, part 3
Celice is an ECS with a modular game engine. One of the goals for awhile has been to figure out how to register and resolve interactions between two entities. This is critical for collision detection resolution among other resolvers.
Think about it this way, a ship in a game fires a bullet, which is basically an entity initialized with a velocity and other attributes. Imagine this bullet hits an enemy, a collision detection system detects this and adds the collision information to the entity. A collision res... -
Bracket usage
I used to think formatting ifs, fors, while, and just about anything that uses a code block like this was attractive to the eyes:while(condition)
{
}
I've been coding a lot of javascript lately and think that kind of formatting isn't consistent/attractive anymore with lambda functions, so now I'm back to usingwhile(condition){
}
as the default for anything javascript. I still use the former for PHP and Java though, it may change to the latter sooner or later. -
So Where Do You Put Your Configuration Files?
In developing a Java Application, one of the issue you will come across is external configuration files, especially if you are making a server application, and the first idea to solve this is to bundle it up with the project. That idea doesn't scale well at all when you want to put the application on multiple servers. The next idea is to allow the user to enter in an IP Addr to connect to when running the jar file. No one wants to do that everytime they run the jar file... Okay, so let's do what companies t... -
Celice part 2
You might remember this if you saw a previous post about how nice I thought Crafty was. No more Crafty, this is Celice powering this guy with the use of Canvas. Entities, Components, Systems and Game States! The tile object code was straight copy pasted from the code I used with Crafty. That's what I call portable independent code! Little change to the entity portion of the tile creation was needed (mostly just adding the new components). Let's talk input.
Input, Intent and Action

Celice
My new adventure with Celice started after I committed to making CraftyJS better by fixing the problems I saw with it, which were bugs, technical cruft (lack of documentation/tests and encapsulation of code), and making it fast on mobile. These bugs are related to oversight and handling of legacy devices/multiple browsers. I then realized I could do better than trying to restructure and modify everything in Crafty by doing my own thing because I was essentially just learning what had already been done and t... -
So I ran into this PHP issue with Static variables
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3169993/overriding-static-members-in-derived-classes-in-php?rq=1
The above link has a great example of what I want trying to do. I was trying to assign static variables in a subclass that inherited it's static variables from a base and turns out that doing that changed the static variables inside of the base, which is a huge problem for what I was doing. There are many classes that inherit from this one base class, so one screw up like that and things go awry everywhere.

Starting to see why an Entity table could be useful.
I've been discovering ways to manage data/resources in my database for Dark Gale and one way I found was to manage resource states, locks, and actions. Resource States are basically a link to a resource (Account, Notification, Mail, Magic, Item, etc.) and I attached two states (new, hidden) to this resource state to avoid lookups for checking if a resource is new or hidden especially since the table is so light weight. Locks work exactly how it is supposed to where it maintains a lock on an artificial resou... -
What is with Impl being a suffix?
http://isagoksu.com/2009/development/java/naming-the-java-implementation-classes/
I've been looking at some Javadocs for Hadoop and Hazelcast to name a few and I've been seeing this Impl suffix as explained in the article above. I can't stop double taking at a classes that have this suffix. What is the point? What happened to learning how to name your classes? Why isn't there a Interface suffix or Abstract prefix in the class name if you are so lazy? It feels very weird seeing the name of what you want and t...
